THROUGH EUROPE IN A DAY

SATURDAY, 9 MAY FROM 11 AM TO 5 PM
IN TALLINN

Come and walk through Europe in one day!

“Through Europe in a Day” is a major entertainment event opening the embassies of EU Member States (16 this time) and the EU House to visitors and inviting everybody to a gathering in the Tammsaare Park. There is no admission charge.

This year “Through Europe in a Day” is dedicated to the European year of Innovation and Creativity. During the day different events focusing on the theme of the European year will take place at all the locations: exhibitions, musical performances, tastings, meetings with interesting people, etc. Here you can get more detailed information about the programme at different locations.

Many of the embassies who are not organizing anything in their buildings will gather in the Tammsaare Park to present their activities to the public (you can meet the representatives of seven embassies in the park).

In addition to that, artists with connections to various cultures will perform on the stage put up in the park throughout the day. The concert will be headlined by David Benton at 4 PM.  You can also listen to the Toompea Choir, how an episode of the Estonian TV program “Eesti nokitseb” (“DIY Estonia”) is made and groups of young people will bring a bit of sunshine to the day.

Naturally we have also thought about children: there is a dedicated space for them where they can learn new things, play and take an active part in the day under the supervision of friendly teachers. Many games and quizzes will be organised throughout the day and there will also be prizes for the best participants.

The three main prizes will be travel vouchers amounting to 15 000, 10 000 and 5000 kroons (the winner can choose the destination and time of travel). There will also be smaller prizes donated by the embassies.

Programme at the Tammsaare park

In the Tammsaare park entertainment will be provided throughout the day. The host of the day will be Tõnu Einasto.  The programme is dedicated to creativity and innovation and there will be ample possibilities for people of all ages to participate.

There will be seven embassies and the representatives of the Estonian Year of Innovation in the Tammsaare Park organizing different games and quizzes for everybody. In addition to them also the EURid will be presenting their activities.

Several quizzes on European research and innovation will also take place.

Children can spend their day at a special marquee where they will be entertained by a host. Various games and competitions will  take place in the marquee and around it throughout the day (a drawing contest, dice throwing competitions, assembling jigsaw puzzles, etc). Location on the map.

The Hungarian Institute will be hosting the Europe Day events together with the Polish Embassy. This symbolizes the good cooperation between the two countries throughout the history.

The Hungarian Institute will delight its visitors with an exhibition of Robert Varady’s work.

Varady’s activities during the past 30 odd years have centred around poetry, mathematics and the philosophy connecting the two. His works are not mere didactical illustrations.
Throughout decades Varady has remained faithful to his symbolical approach while his meanings have continued to develop together with the world.
During the last couple of years he has mostly dealt with the possibility of an artist to maintain their artistic individuality in the virtual world of networks and constructs and in the cyber space.
Várady  has been interested in the different layers of copies, reproductions and multiplication. Fractals form the mathematical background to his work (being also the title of one of his later series of works) and Plato’s sceptical views on art as making copies of copies the philosophical one.
Várady has dedicated his works, among other poets, to Hölderlin, Georg Trakl and Novalis who have also had a profound influence on his art.
The variety of his sources of inspiration is also reflected in the depth of his paintings. Large format, rich colours and a crisp line of drawing hide intricate symbols which in turn create multilevel metaphors.

This overview was based on a text by Andrea Bodrács.
The exhibition was organized with the help of the Várfok Galerii from Budapest.

 Lithuanian Embassy

The photo exhibition “Unseen Lithuania” by Marius Jovaiša is displayed at the premises. This spectacular exhibition has already been travelling in different countries in Europe, America, Australia, etc.

A lot of interesting information, booklets about tourism in Lithuania, places of interest, most attractive routes for travellers, etc will be available to visitors.
