The exhibition “Lithuanian money from litas to euro” will be open on Tuesday, 13 January at the Eesti Pank Museum, Estonia pst 11, Tallinn.
Adopting the euro marks a new stage in the history of money in Lithuania. The exhibition displays the Lithuanian national currency from the entry into circulation of the litas in 1922 to the introduction of the Lithuanian euro coins.
The exhibition is divided into four sections. The first part covers the years 1918–1922 and the Lithuanian Republic before the litas entered into circulation. The second part describes the founding of the Lithuanian Central Bank in 1922 and the years until Lithuania was occupied in 1940. The third part tells the story of how Lithuania regained its independence in 1990 and the means of payment used during the time of transition. The fourth part looks at the years from when the litas came back into use in 1993 until the euro came into circulation. The exhibition also displays a selection of the most valuable collector coins of the Lithuanian Central Bank.
The exhibition has been prepared in cooperation with the National Museum of Lithuania and the Lithuanian Embassy in Estonia.
The exhibition remains open until 26 February 2015. Entrance to the museum and the exhibition is free. More info by phone +372 668 0760.
