Baltic carriers join forces: joint procurement of regional trains for “Rail Baltica” announced
Today in Tallinn, Minister of Transport Juras Taminskas participated in an event where the rail operators of the three Baltic states—Lithuania's LTG Link, Latvia's Vivi, and Estonia's Elron—announced the launch of a joint procurement tender for new European standard-gauge regional trains. This historic step marks a new phase in regional transportation, which will ensure fast, sustainable, and high-quality travel on the future “Rail Baltica” line.
"Construction of Rail Baltica in Lithuania is progressing steadily— the country's first European standard-gauge tracks have already been laid, and construction is now underway along a 114 km section. Working closely with our Baltic neighbours, we are now preparing for the next important step: the procurement of new trains. This is an investment not only in new rolling stock, but also in making people’s journeys faster and more comfortable while strengthening the security of the entire region," said Minister of Transport Juras Taminskas.
At the event, attended by the transport ministers of the three Baltic countries and the heads of transport companies, it was emphasized that joint procurement will not only optimize costs but also ensure the technical compatibility of rolling stock throughout the region. The new regional trains will be adapted to the 1,435 mm standard “Rail Baltica” track gauge and will meet both international and national technical infrastructure requirements.
Minister J. Taminskas and his accompanying Deputy Minister R. Žiobakas also visited the Lithuanian Embassy in Tallinn and met with embassy staff.
